Associated Country Women of the World Report of the 26th Triennial Conference 'Women Worldwide - The Voice of Today - from Kay East
The conference was a wonderful experience, meeting women from all over the World. We were welcomed by the World President, Dato Ursula Goh, who told us that 'many women from many Nations share the same dreams to be educated, to live in peace, to enjoy good health and be prosperous and to be heard'. Sadly in many countries women are prevented from achieving these dreams, the conference gives voice to women whose experiences are unnoticed. We heard about the world wide projects ACWW is involved in as well as advising the UN on the experience of women through its UN representatives. ACWW's priorities are the relief of poverty, relief of sickness and the protection and preservation of health and the advancement of education, the UN Millennium Goals have been embraced and are considered in all the work of ACWW - as the committee Chairmen advised in their reports to conference,. The resolutions were presented to Conference, there was much debate especially about the 'Retention of Arable Land for Food Production' but all resolutions were carried. As the Conference ended, voting for the new officers took place, Mrs May Kidd from Scotland was elected the new World President. It was not all work! We went on a pre-conference tour with WI members from Canada and Iceland, visiting Nashville, Memphis and Graceland. My husband enjoyed the Spouses programme. Because so many people from our Federations were unable to attend the conference due to the volcano, I did a daily Blog for those at home - if you want to know more read it at http://hotspringsapril2010.blogspot.com/ Look out for information on our Federations next project Kay East |
