COURSES

091.1202         Handbells      Tutor: Sandra Winter                                                           Cost:  £342

This practical course will cover all aspects of handbell tune ringing: the instruments and their history; how to play, care for and maintain them; different styles of playing and the techniques used; varied music to play.  Students will work as a team to learn a selection of music, from simple to more complicated as skills are developed. The ringing of handchimes and belleplates may be included, and video and audio tapes may be used to demonstrate special effects.  The ability to read music will be an advantage but NOT essential, as tuition on staff notation will be given and coloured music will be available.

091.1203         Photoshop     Tutor: Sally Scrivener                                                          Cost:  £342

A beginners course for those with a small amount of computing knowledge. You will learn how to use the tools and palettes of Adobe Photoshop and apply them to different materials provided. You can then rejuvenate your old photographs which will be scanned in. New compositions can be created from your material and areas enhanced and altered as required. Handouts will be given for each new skill learnt. A pen drive (memory stick) would be a useful purchase if you would like to keep a copy of the work you have done. You will never believe photographs again!  Approximate cost of course to students over and above fee: £10 (purchase of memory stick – optional).

091.1204         Picture it in Collage and Stitch       Tutor: Richard Box                           Cost  £342

At the start of the course you will be guided through a project which your tutor has designed for you. Learn Richard Box's renowned combined technique of fabric collage with machine and hand embroidery. Plans, patterns and materials will be provided free of charge. Once you have experienced the process of combining the techniques of fabric collage with machine and hand embroidery you will then be able to start interpreting your own designs in this way with the materials which you will need to bring with you.  You will need to bring your own electric sewing machine, with which you are familiar and which drops or covers the 'feed', does zig-zag stitch and has a darning foot.  Full list of requirements will be sent with course details.

091.1205         Autumn Getaway       Tutor: Gillian Avery                                                  Cost  £378

A combination of physical activities with moments of relaxation and recreation.  Exercise Workouts  - exercising for all round fitness at your own level, in a friendly and sociable atmosphere. Talks, Discussion, Workshop  -  possible topics may be the importance of good posture, healthy eating, stress management, osteoporosis.  Two rambles  -  each of about four miles.  On one ramble we will explore the countryside along the Thames and on the other we will be walking on the Ridgeway and admiring the views.

Line Dancing/Country Dancing  -  don’t worry if this is your first time!  If you have danced before, we’ll have new dances for you to try.  Massage  -  a well deserved basic shoulder massage.

Relaxation  -  enjoy!  Please be aware that massage, relaxation and meditation involved in many complementary therapies can make you feel emotional.

091.1206         Shakespeare Country          Tutor:  Bernard Pumfrey                             Cost  £378

A discovery course of illustrated lectures, professionally produced video presentations and tutor-accompanied visits exploring this beautiful shire county which once contained the cities of Birmingham and Coventry. From their stronghold at Warwick the Earls dominated Central England and at times were second only to the King. Shakespeare, the Man of the Millennium, told their stories, while Elizabeth and Edward VII found love. Its beautiful landscape, stunning architecture and superb gardens give it an aristocratic air. It is really a gem, worthy of investigation.  Stout shoes and waterproofs will be needed.

Please note that there will be a fair amount of walking and standing, so a degree of stamina is required.

091.1207         Great British Cookery          Tutor: Carrie O Regan                                 Cost  £376

These dishes will represent the various regions of the country and include old favourites as well as incorporate some of the new ideas from the exciting range of available foods that are grown or reared in Great Britain.  We will be making recipes to suit every occasion from starters, main meals, puddings and baking.  We will cover about 20 recipes in the demonstrations and practical sessions and you will receive a recipe booklet to take home to cover all recipes. We will be making a range of dishes which will be frozen at college to take home.  Please bring along a range of containers (ice cream boxes and other plastic containers and some plastic bags would be ideal) and a cool box/bag would assist in taking frozen items home.  Items will include a soup, main dish, pudding and baking items.  You are very welcome to bring with you your favourite sharp knife(s) and any other small items of non-electrical kitchen equipment you prefer to work with.  Please also bring an apron and wear sensible, closed-in shoes.

ACCOMMODATION:   Please indicate any special accommodation requirements. Some bedrooms are located on first and second floors and are only accessed via a staircase as Denman College does not have lifts.  Most residential buildings involve a walk of around 100 yards. The College has two bedrooms adapted for students with disabilities.

MEALS:  Full board. Please indicate any special dietary requirements, including food allergies and special diets.  The Chef is very happy to meet with you on arrival at the college to discuss your requirements.

COACH TRAVEL:  There will be two Federation coaches starting from different parts of the county, with the first pick-up at approx 10am.  All times will be confirmed at a later date. See application form for details of the ‘pick-up’ points.  On Monday 27th September, we plan to arrive at Denman College at approx 3.30pm, in time for afternoon tea at 4pm. We depart after lunch on Thursday 30 September at approx. 1.30pm. We cannot offer a reduction for members not travelling by Federation coach.

CANCELLATION:  The Denman College Cancellation policy is as follows:-

Up to 8 weeks before the course start date                                       Deposit is forfeited

6-8 weeks before course start date                                                  50% of total course fee

4-6 weeks before course start date                                                   75% of total course fee

2-4 weeks before course start date                                                   90% of total course fee

Within 2 weeks of course start date                                                  Full fee is forfeited

Students are strongly advised to obtain insurance against the event of cancellation. A  Cancel Sure Insurance Leaflet will come with confirmation of a place, but there are also other companies who offer this kind of service. It is also advisable for students to check their own insurance policies to see whether they are already insured.
