SOLE STREET WI

Sole Street WI did not meet in August, but we enjoyed two extra events.

Firstly, we had afternoon tea in a member`s interesting garden, with home made cakes, enough for at least three pieces each!  The rain stayed away but in any case we were protected by a large umbrella.

Later in the month, thirteen of us plus three husbands,  visited Belmont House, home of the Harris family and bought in 1801 with prize money gained through General Harris`s successful military career in India.  In 1815 he was created Lord Harris in recognition of his defeat of the notorious Tipoo Sultan at the Battle of Seringapatam.  The house these days is famous for its collection of 18th century clocks, together with momentos of the family`s history, and paintings by Trinidadian artist, Michel Jean Cazabon.  There was something to interest everyone.

After a good lunch in the Orangery, we particularly admired the walled garden and kitchen gardens, before heading off home.

The Book Club met this month, having read “The Lieutenant” by Kate Grenville, leading to lots of discussion on the iniquities of the slave trade, and what life might have been like for the aborigines of Australia, had men had a more enlightened approach to primitive peoples.

One of our members went to Denman for a Water Colour Reunion Course, and those attending enjoyed it so much that they decided to book when possible for a Water Solubles Oil Painting Course with the same tutor in 2012 – a leap of faith in the future.

Our next meeting will be on 28th September when Janet Hancock will tell us about the Role of a Court Embroiderer.

There are also courses and activities available to WI members,
locally and at Denman College near Oxford.

....................

We have a fund raising stall, raffle and competition at most of the meetings and the Book Club also meets every month.
There are one or two Craft Days throughout the year as well.

Some Sole Street WI members started a new Creative Writing Group at Meopham Library on the first Thursday of the month from 10am until 12 o'clock which is open to everyone, and not linked directly to the WI.   A visually impaired writing group member has translated some Normandy Museum Guides into English Braille, which  means that war veterans can read information independently.
We're hoping that  beginners who just want to record their memories for children or  grandchildren will come along as well as those who write novels or short stories.
