Annual Days - Ditton Community Centre - April 13th & 14th 2010

Jen Lindsey-Clark – She bakes therefore she is!

Let’s Cook Project.

Helen Swan from The Home Economic sub-committee introduced to the audience some of the WI members who had taken part in the ‘Let’s Cook’ project.  They told of their experiences when they went to various centres to teach young (and old) mothers how to cook nutritious meals for their children.  All the tutors are keen to carry on with the project and hopefully NFWI will be able to find some more funding to continue.  We will keep you posted!

Susan Phillips and some of her magnificent displays.

Report of the Home Economics Day Annual Days at Ditton April 13th & 14th 2010.
‘Chocolates and Flowers.’ What more could you ask for?  That was the treat at the Home Economics Annual Day at Ditton in April.

The first speaker was Jen Lindsey-Clark, with a brief history of Chocolate from the Incas to the present day. She acquainted us with the intricacies of blending the chocolate, covering truffles and even putting coloured patterns on the chocolates and cake decorations. Such perfection and so delicious an end product. Samples were handed round, ending a thoroughly engaging morning.

After lunch, it was ‘Flowers’ and my what blooms and banter too! Susan Phillips made unbelievable displays with such aplomb and kept us all amused by her anecdotes and the charm with which they were delivered. A real comedienne.  The finale was a stage filled with magnificent arrangements - all donated to the raffle. Members were seen staggering home, beneath huge floral arrangements. A fantastic day, thank you.

A Spray of Roses for June

SUGAR CRAFT WORKSHOP  -  21st June 9.30am - 3.30pm. Ethel Hunt Lodge TN2 4AG

Shirley Price, the tutor gave a wonderful lesson on Sugar Craft  roses.  She had spent many days preparing the basics for the members to work  with on the day.  They made a spray of roses worthy to  decorate any cake. Shirley went through each step with the members and  gave them many tips on working with sugar craft paste.  The day was  brilliant!.
Members requested another  Sugar Craft Workshop which will be held on  the 30th November at Ethel Hunt Lodge but with a Christmas theme.

Potentially Harmful Plants
The British public is fortunate to have access to a wealth of plant species.  Most of these are harmless.  However, there is a risk associated with a small number of plants used in the house and garden.  The Horticultural Traders Association has more information on their website www.hta.co.uk
