Performing Arts

Are you interested in acting or singing  but cannot find an outlet for your talents? Then read on – our sub-committee combines both music and drama and aims to encourage and develop the interests and abilities of WI members in West Kent.  Through workshops and events, providing tuition, fun and pleasure we endeavour to achieve this, and also where possible, give guidance on the choice of music and plays.

If you are interested in singing or drama then please consider joining us at one, or more, of the events that have been arranged with your particular interest in mind.

The sub-committee meets five times a year to which observers are always very welcome, as are suggestions and ideas for future events.

The date for this very special Federation event, which is held every four years, is
Wednesday 8th December.
Details of how to apply for tickets will be in West Kent News shortly.

CHOIR FOR CAROLS AT ROCHESTER

Members of Kent-West Kent are invited to apply to join the Federation Choir for this memorable occasion under the guidance of our conductor Carole Kirby.

This year's choir will consist of sopranos, altos, tenors and basses so, as well as ladies, this year we should like gentlemen, known to  WI members, who belong to a choir and are used to singing parts, to apply as well.

Four part singing adds an extra dimension to the sound of the finished product.  The music chosen this year will include some lively melodies by modern composers as well as the traditional ones.

The rehearsals will only be at ONE venue, Otford memorial Church Hall, starting on Friday 10 September and then every subsequent Friday until 26 November, bar one (date to be advised) between 1.45pm and 4.00pm.  A final rehearsal will take place at 10.30am on Wednesday 8 December in Rochester Cathedral before joining together with members at 2.30pm for 'Carols At Rochester'.  It is important to attend as many rehearsals as possible to reach a high standard, and knowledge of music will be an asset.

It is realised that some members will have to travel further than usual but, I am sure you will agree, it is a privilege to represent the WI and sing in such a fabulous venue.

To apply to sing in the choir please complete the INDIVIDUAL application form on the back page of the May copy of West Kent News.  Would sopranos please indicate if they are able to reach top A.  We look forward to receiving your applications before 31 July.

This event will be for Members Only

Speaking With Confidence (Stage 1)

On a cold Friday in February, seventeen very apprehensive members met at Otford Village Memorial Hall for the first day of the two day 'Speaking With Confidence' course being run by NFWI Tutor Fran Saltmarsh.

Fran started the day by teaching us some breathing and relaxation techniques which made us all feel much calmer.  we were then given tips to improve our articulation, before working on increasing the volume  of our voices by being all asked to speak at once.  It should come as no surprise that we completed this task with ease!  The amount of progress we had made became really apparent by the end of the second day.  Everyone was given a passage to read and, without exception, these were delivered with clarity and feeling, and with a confidence we never knew we possessed.  we now look forward to putting everything we learned into practice at our WI meetings.

Emmie Shipman Competition 2010

" WHAT MUSIC DOES FOR ME "

This year 23 members gave our judge a difficult task to choose which of their six line, three verse poems entitled "What Music Does For Me" deserved to be the winner of this award.

The judge, Valerie Armstrong, commented that all the poems were excellent and it had taken her some time to decide which entry gave the best interpretation of the title.

We are delighted to announce that Mrs Ann Burton from Farnborough WI was the winner.

Ann very confidently read her poem at the Annual Council Meeting in March after which our Federation Chairman presented her with the traditional prize of a paperweight.

Congratulations to Ann on winning the Emmie Shipman Award and thank you to everyone who entered the competition

Emmie Shipman Competition Winning Poem

What Music Does For Me

When I'm feeling downhearted and down in the dumps
And life's garden is nothing but weeds
Music inspires me, to face up to the bumps
And sow that garden with beautiful seeds
I find a good sing, can be just the thing
That a poor heavy heart often needs.

Rousing songs from the shows are what I love best
To wake up a soul that is jaded
In my mind I'm sure the star who stood up to the test
Yet, alas, the beauty has faded
Though I'm no Elaine Paige, as I stand on life's stage
The troubles and fears have been raided.

Yes, music calms nerves and eases the mind
It's really as good as a tonic
But something is puzzling, for I seem to find
That the outcome is really ironic
For while I like the verse, those around me feel worse
And I'm not required by the Royal Philharmonic.
