Sport & Leisure

The Sports & Leisure committee organises a range of activities, from the very energetic to more relaxed events such as Scrabble or Whist.
Each year we try to introduce members to at least one new activity as a 'taster' day.

London 2012 Ceremonies would like to invite WI Members to volunteer support for the London 2012 Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the Olympic and Paralympic Games and hope that we can welcome your participation on this historic occasion where we will deliver ALL 4 Ceremonies!

From this link you will find the application to confirm your availability and interest in specific volunteer roles. We would really appreciate you discussing this opportunity with your local members and spreading the word throughout the WI network. We are particularly hopeful for volunteers to our Costume Workshop where some exciting creations are taking shape!

You are asked to complete the attached Roles & Availability form confirming:

· your availability for the compulsory dates for each ceremony and your availability for the evening & weekend rehearsals, and

· your selection of the role(s) you are interested in.

Along with your completed Roles & Availability form, you are asked to include a covering letter answering:

· Why you want to be a Ceremonies Volunteer

· What you hope to gain from the experience

· Any related experience or qualifications for the role(s) you have selected

· Whether you are interested and available to help us facilitate our next round of auditions

12 February - 4th March

Once completed, please email the form and covering letter to Volunteers@London2012Ceremonies.com, by midnight, 12th February 2012.

Successfully shortlisted applicants will be invited to interview before the end of January 2012 (We understand that this date has been extended)

Two important notes:

· any applications received after the above deadline will be kept on file to refer to in the event of future need, and

· if you have already been selected as a Games Maker Volunteer, you cannot also participate as a Ceremonies Volunteers due to a conflict of time commitments.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering to support the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is only through the commitment of Volunteers that the Olympic and Paralympic Games & Ceremonies can be successful!

Very best of luck!

Darts Tournament for 2011-12 is just getting underway with the semi-finals and finals will be held at Tovil Working Men’s Club on Monday 16 April 2012.

Watch out for information on other 2012 events – a croquet taster day in May and the Federation Walk in May/June are just two of the activities planned.

Orchid Walks, High Elms Country Park  6, 7, 10 and 15 June 2011

Despite fears that the warm dry spring might have delayed the orchids, there were plenty in flower, albeit smaller than usual, when Mr Howard Cox led members through High Elms Country Park also pointing out other interesting flowers, trees and grasses.  There were many common spotted orchids to see and the pyramidal orchids were just coming into flower.  Twyblades and man orchids were harder to spot due to their green colouring and some of the groups were fortunate to find a bee orchid.    The birds-nest orchid, so-called because of its tangled root was found blooming in the middle of the woods.
Sadly, the weather chose to change as the first walk was taking place, but the rain did not spoil the sight of the beautiful plants and also brought out the Roman snails, a species not familiar to many of us.

A report for the Multi Activity Day on Saturday 23rd July.

I was the only member from my WI who wanted to attend this event, but I knew the other participants would be friendly so I decided to give it a go.  I scored a hit in the archery by bursting a balloon with my arrow, although another lady bettered this by actually splitting the pin that held the balloon to the target.
Scaling the climbing wall was quite a challenge for unfit muscles, and the instructor's help in finding the correct footholds was much needed.  But I got to the top.

Abseiling down commando style was a real buzz. After a lunch break to stock up on food energy, and give my legs time to stop shaking, it was time to shoot the air rifles.  Due to numerous rules we were not allowed to shoot bunnies for our supper, but the static targets were just as much fun, and I managed to hit the middle with one shot.
One lady managed to destroy the peg which held the target to the string, which was very accurate shooting indeed. The day was rounded off with some fun games - in my case not very competitive, but hilarious golf croquet, on the rather bumpy field.  All the members said what a fantastic day they had had, and my son was very envious of my opportunity.

Go the WI - paint-balling, or an army assault course, next year anyone?

Darts Tournament 2010-2011

The semi-finals and finals of the 2010-2011 Darts Tournament were held on Monday 18 April at Tovil Working Men’s Club.

48 WIs took part in the tournament this year, one of the semi-finalists being Matfield WI, who had never played in the tournament before.  The other semi-finalists were Lenham WI, Hextable and Swanley WI and Istead Rise WI.

The final was a closely fought match between Istead Rise WI and Hextable and Swanley WI, with Istead Rise WI being the eventual winners.
