Sport & Leisure

The Sports & Leisure committee organises a range of activities, from the very energetic to more relaxed events such as Scrabble or Whist.  Each year we try to introduce members to at least one new activity as a 'taster' day.

The programme for 2010 contains some New and Exciting Events

10 June 2010    Sailing at Danson Park
"Sailing at Danson Park Lake - 10 June 2010

On an overcast day 27 aspiring sailors took to the water at Danson Park.
Under the supervision of Instructors Stuart and Daren the ladies were divided into groups, some taking the boats for 2 persons whilst the others took boats for 4 or 5.

After a little instruction they took to the water like ducks - only 2 Ladies took to the water more - by capsizing their boat!  This did not deter them and they said it was the best laugh they had had in years!

After 2 hours members were given a welcome cup of tea or coffee and of course got
 into dry clothes.

Everyone said it was a wonderful experience and thoroughly enjoyed the event.

Thanks were duly given to Stuart and Daren who seemed to enjoy themselves as much as we did."

And in verse:
Sailing

We listened intently to what we must do
For how to go sailing – we hadn’t a clue
“You steer with this rod – push it over you see
No need to shove it – just push it gently.”

Soon we were sailing straight up and down
But one of the boats just would not go round.
Another got caught in the current and trees
The men were there to tow them quick as you please.

Two of them decided they wanted to swim
While the boat overturned they slid gracefully in
Again the instructors were aware of their plight
And reaching them quickly soon got them upright.

We had to go in, we had had our fun
The time went so fast, we’d only begun.
Then one of the swimmers had another dip
When her foot on the jetty gave her the slip.

So thank you Committee for arranging the day
It was really good fun we found in every way.
There’s just one question or more a refrain
When can we all go sailing again?

The Other Side of London and the London 2012 Olympic Site

Patricia Francis, our enthusiastic and extremely well-informed guide, accompanied six coach-loads of members on trips to the Other Side of London in March, April and May this year.  As well as visiting the site of the London 2012 Olympics, she showed members around sites in East London which are currently being regenerated.

The first stop was Canary Wharf where, in addition to the well-known high-rise bank buildings, there are gardens, artworks, water-features, many restaurants and bars and a shopping mall.  After coffee there, members were driven on a circuit around the London 2012 Olympics site, before walking to view the new stadiums which are being built.  Then it was on to the regeneration of the site of the Royal Docks via Newham and its colourful shopping street before stopping for tea and cake at the Thames Barrier park.  After a look at the O2 Arena and a stop at the Greenwich Eco-park, it was time to head back to Kent after a day filled with interest.

We are still thinking of events for 2011---any ideas??? Please let us know.
